Join the LSO as the curtain rises on the IN PURSUIT OF BEAUTY 13-14 season. The LSO’s spectacular opening night performances will spotlight just one monumental work - Symphony No. 2 in C minor by Gustav Mahler. Part of Maestro Cho’s Mahler concert series, this extraordinary masterwork unites a large-scale orchestra with mass chorus, two soloists, and an offstage brass and percussion ensemble for a powerful and breathtaking discovery of the beauty of the after-life. The lush and lyrical melodies Mahler has become known for will stir your emotions as the LSO is joined by The Lubbock Chorale, Texas Tech University Choir and distinguished soloists. Get in a blue mood with the LSO! Join Maestro Cho for a scintillating night of musical contrasts as the LSO features the works of Ludwig van Beethoven and American composer, George Gershwin. These performances will feature two of Gershwin’s most memorable works for orchestra: An American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue, joined by Jason Hardink, pianist. An American in Paris evokes the sights and sounds of the French capital in the 1920’s while Rhapsody in Blue infuses jazz overtones to depict the diverse kaleidoscope which is America. Turning the clock back, the LSO will also perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Op. 67 in C minor, renowned for history's most recognizable 4-note motif. The evening will also include Leonore Overture No. 3 by Beethoven.

The LSO’s performances titled GREATNESS will feature brilliant Bulgarian guest conductor, Pavel Baleff at the baton conducting works by Richard Wagner, Giovanni Bottesini, and Franz Schubert. The evening will open with Wagner’s sentimental Siegfried Idyll. Mark Morton, tenured LSO Principal Bass, will then perform Concerto for Double Bass No. 2 in C minor with the orchestra. This virtuosic showpiece will feature the double bass like you’ve never heard it before! The evening will conclude with Schubert’s Symphony No. 9, D. 944, in C Major, otherwise known as “The Great.” The selection written in the grand symphonic style is reflective of its timeless majesty. Join us and let this regal night of music inspire you to your own greatness.

Spring at the LSO will be marked by a musical change of seasons and performances by the orchestra of three of Russia’s greatest composers. These unconventional musicians utilized their craft to transform their respective political and social landscapes. Maestro Cho will open these concerts with Introduction and Gopak to The Fair at Sorochinsk by Modest Mussorgsky. The LSO will then be joined by pianist Rufus Choi in a performance of one of the piano repertoire’s most beloved selections, Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 23 in Bb minor by Tchaikovsky. A graduate of The Julliard School, Mr. Choi has been heralded for his “energized white-hot pianism.” The evenings will build to a climax with Symphony No. 5, Op. 47 in D minor by Dmitri Shostakovich. Russian pride and power will be on full display at these extraordinary performances.

The LSO will bring the curtain down on the IN PURSUIT OF BEAUTY 13-14 season in dramatic fashion with timeless masterpieces which will thrill Lubbock audiences. The evenings commence with Symphonies of Wind Instruments by Igor Stravinsky. In this work, Stravinsky pushed the boundaries of musical design and rhythmic structure. Maestro Cho will then conduct Death and Transfiguration by Richard Strauss. Full of spectacular pageantry, Strauss’ composition was dedicated to a friend and depicts both the death of an artist and the journey of the soul from this life to the next. Maestro Cho will then draw the season to glorious conclusion with Symphony No. 1, Op. 68 in C minor by Johannes Brahms. Emotive and brimming with lavish melodies, attendees will be enraptured!
